As the slump in the U. S. economy rages on, many Americans are looking into business ownership as a means to supplement, or even replace their current or former incomes. But how do you know if entrepreneurship is a good fit for you? Before you quit your job (or even take on a part-time entrepreneurial enterprise), here’s a short checklist that compares and contrasts the differences between being an employee and an entrepreneur.

Different Values

The term “entrepreneur” is derived from the French language and means “one who undertakes (some task).” Entrepreneurship is indeed an enormous undertaking. Many of the qualities that make people great employees do not translate well into entrepreneurship, and vice versa. Both employees and entrepreneurs want the same thing: financial stability. But employees and entrepreneurs have completely different values, and therefore, take different approaches to achieving financial stability. Identifying which group to align with is one of the very first tasks to accomplish.

Views on Failure

Many of us were raised to try and avoid mistakes, as their consequences can be dire and difficult to rebound from. As a result, many people fear failure, are risk averse, and will hesitate, or even neglect, to take necessary courses of action in their businesses. An entrepreneur understands that it is impossible to avoid risk, and failure is sometimes a reality of doing business, but is never finite. Entrepreneurs consider failure, but only as part of determining the most direct route towards an outcome, and should never be feared or avoided.

Delegation

Most employees buy into the idea that each person should be judged and rewarded for their individual efforts. Consequently, many employees spend their time specializing in particular fields where they can be lauded as “the best” in that area. Entrepreneurs believe in cooperation as a means of getting more done with less resources, and they leverage the individual talents of many towards a common goal.

Security versus Freedom

Many people that go into entrepreneurship do so as a means to seek the security they feel is lacking at their jobs. The problem with this mentality is that many business ventures require time, and sometimes major adjustments, before turning a profit, making security extremely illusive. An entrepreneur goes into a venture to express a level of freedom that cannot be achieved as an employee. Many entrepreneurs sacrifice their own personal security for the sake of creating a stable enterprise, refraining from taking money out of the business in the initial stages, which sometimes lasts for months, or even a few years.

Innovation

Many people do better as employees because they prefer to be supervised. Employees prefer to leave the actual strategy and much of the big picture planning to the executives and supervisors. On the other hand, entrepreneurs look for opportunities to improve old systems or create new ones. They are self motivated and require very little supervision.

Evaluating Opportunities

Employees tend to judge opportunities based primarily on cost in dollars and cents. Employees prefer to trade their time for the predictability of a steady paycheck. Entrepreneurs evaluate opportunities based on value. Entrepreneurs often leverage money to save time and other resources, or they trade their time for the prospect of learning a needed skill or building a business relationship.

Responsibility

Employees prefer to take responsibility for their own work or projects they are directly in charge of. Many employees do not feel directly responsible for the success or well-being of the company they work for as a whole. Entrepreneurs prefer that the company’s success begin and end with them. They take responsibility for everything that happens, whether or not their direct actions are involved.

In closing, there is no right or wrong way to travel the road to financial stability. There are both pros and cons to each approach. Making an honest assessment of yourself and your inclination towards one method or the other will save you a great deal of time, effort, frustration and expense. But as usual, don’t just take my word for it…take it for checking!

If you are willing to take some risks, are really fed up with living under a boss, and think that all the uncertainty with jobs need not be faced because there are plenty of other things to do then you just might be the next big entrepreneur because you are already thinking like one. Before your start typing your resignation letter you should consider going through some entrepreneurship course so that you know exactly what you need to do as one.

If you do not have enough time to enroll in a regular course then do not stress it. You can always join a distance-learning course and attend classes on the Internet. In other words, you can learn entrepreneurship online. Not only is this convenient but it is also a whole lot cheaper. Many accredited universities also offer online programs for working professionals.

Here are some of the programs that would be of interest to you. If you have an associates degree or a high school diploma then you can opt for this course that teaches things like marketing management, entrepreneurial finance, product development, business law, and so on. If you want you could go for a bachelor’s degree course in Business Administration or Small Business and Entrepreneurship. If you are working full time then you should go for an Associate or Bachelor degree in Business Administration or Entrepreneurship that permits you to take classes on the Internet.

If you are already a graduate then you can also do your MBA (Master’s of Business Administration) online. The MBA course will teach you how to analyze your business and develop the right strategies, how to write business plans, and also introduce you to several case studies of businesses and their marketing strategies.
Business communication is another vital aspect of entrepreneurship and you can get a Masters of Arts in Business Communication from many good online universities.

Online education through a virtual campus is slightly different than attending a college full time but for the most part it is a good experience. Your classroom is waiting for your 24 hours a day and you can just hook up to the Internet and continue your education when you find convenient. Some universities even include video options where you can chat with faculty and other students to make the whole thing more personal.

If you believe that you have what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur then should seriously consider taking one of the above courses to sharpen your skills with a bit of formal education before starting your business.

The advent and continual growth of the Internet as a resource for information has given us the ability to make informed decisions faster and more efficiently. Thanks to the ‘information highway’, one can learn almost anything online these days, from common tasks like tying a bow tie to more financially lucrative opportunities like stock market trading. An online trading course provides anyone interested in trading, online or otherwise, with the essential skills to make the most of the fluctuating nature of the stock market.

Why online, one might ask. Just as the Internet provides the convenience to experienced online traders, it also provides the ease and flexibility to budding traders who might be interested in trying their hand at investing in the myriad of available financial products like foreign exchange, futures, stocks, etc. Inexperienced traders seeking to better educate themselves are able to attend an online trading course at anytime, anywhere, as long as they have access to the World Wide Web. The course material is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, and learners are thus able to read and refer to the materials as often as they would like, whenever they would like. What this means is that practically anyone would be able to learn to trade, be it the busy executive seeking to keep constantly well-informed, or the stay-at-home mom who has plenty of time to spare (and perhaps a bit of capital she intends on growing by dabbling in trading).

Apart from convenience, an online trading course provides a broad range of content, ranging from eBooks to even peer-reviewed periodicals, with in-depth advice from experts in the field encompassing all the necessary fundamentals and comprehensive analysis in one universal medium, and keen learners would not have to worry that the study material might have been rendered unavailable because it was already borrowed or “checked out” by someone else, like in the case of conventional library material. And because the course material is uploaded online, any updates and changes that have been made can be reflected immediately upon the next upload, so students of such online courses can be kept up to date with new developments that might influence their stock trading education. The more interactive online courses may even integrate up-to-the-minute price fluctuations into its online course materials to give learners a better understanding of the volatile nature of the stock market, and thus delivering a more practical method of learning.

The last benefit that might be of interest to aspiring investors is how such online courses may tie-in to what they might consider doing in the near future. Some courses might provide a more hands-on education in the form of online paper trading, where keen learners are given the opportunity to practice trading online without having to invest any real currency, since it’s really just, to put it simply, an educational game. Such support tools allow one to learn from a more practical experience, and the wealth of knowledge gleaned from exploring different investment strategies would better prepare a novice investor for the real deal when making their first trade in the market with real currency.

Obviously, there are many other benefits to an online trading course than just the three mentioned above. While the benefits mentioned are by far the best of them all, careful consideration still need to be taken into account when selecting an online trading course, as like everything else in life, there are always those who are constantly trying to make a quick buck by preying on the ill-informed.

With a large number of trade shows to choose from, both here in the U.S. and abroad, and an ever- increasing number of new trade shows exploding onto the trade show scene each year, the job of an exhibitor selecting the right trade show(s) to attend can be an overwhelming challenge.

The veteran trade show exhibitor knows, however, that the best way to meet this challenge is to have a solid plan in place by first determining their company’s market, sales goals and promotional objectives.

Once a company fully understands the reasons why it needs to exhibit in a trade show, then, and only then, can it begin to identify the proper trade show that will meet their marketing objectives.

According to Skip Cox, president of Exhibit Surveys Inc., a trade show industry research firm based in Red Bank, New Jersey, the trade show selection process should begin with serious background research. Here are a couple of his tips on how you can research the right trade show for your company:

1. Research the trends in your industry–new technologies, competitors’ preferences, customers’ bias, etc. Then search for trade shows that reflect these trends.
Read trade publications in your field as they are a very good source of the latest
news in your industry. Opportunities abound for companies that are able to capitalize on these developments. Contact the editorial staff of trade publications to learn more about the latest breakthroughs in your business arena. Go to the Internet and research companies that are making news by introducing exciting new products or services in your field.

Contact your trade associations to explore what companies they believe are leading the way. Then, seek out trade shows that are in tune with these trends for your trade show exhibit or your trade show display rental as trend-setting trade shows will be the ideal showcase for your trade show display.

2. Interview your co-workers and people in your field as to what trade shows match up with your client’s needs.

By zeroing in on your client’s profile, you can determine what trade shows mirror your needs. Get input from your top marketing and upper management staff to determine what your market is. In addition, get feedback from your product and marketing managers and also your field sales reps. The sales reps are able to get face- to- face with clients and have a real understanding of their needs.

In fact, according to an Exhibitor Magazine survey of trade show exhibit managers who sought help in selecting trade shows to attend, the most influential input on selecting trade shows came from the sales staff (35%). They were followed by: marketing staff (32%), show management statistics (24%), upper management (20%), following where the competition goes (20%), customer suggestions (18%), other (12%), and the product development staff (8%). The respondents checked off all of the resources that applied.

By doing your research on what is hot in your industry, matching up trade shows that mirror these trends, and answering your client needs, you will be able to select the right trade shows for your company. Then you will be well on the way to a successful trade show exhibit experience. This is true wherever you have your custom trade show exhibit, custom modular exhibit or trade show exhibit rental, whether the exhibit is at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the Moscone Center in San Francisco, the Santa Clara Convention Center or the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.

How do we train our people to become entrepreneurs? How do we instill entrepreneurship into our future generation? My answer is… seriously… Train the Teachers first!

See, the teachers are the moulders of our future generation. Every day, students attend schools and consciously as well as subconsciously gain knowledge. And every day, school teachers are sharing their experience, their knowledge, their habits directly or indirectly to students. Cheers to Teachers!

However, this means that teachers need to be equipped with the best mindset, best knowledge and best experience so that they can in turn impart them to the young.

In my opinion, entrepreneurship programmes should be catered to our teachers. And it should not just stop at this. We should encourage our teachers to take risks and allow them to engage in side businesses as well as other entrepreneurship projects. At present, teachers are not allowed to moonlight, except for tuition assignments. With additional freedom, we could groom teachers to become entrepreneurs, not by theory but in practicality.

If we loosen the grip on this moonlighting issue, teachers will be able to immerse themselves in true and practical entrepreneurship experiences. They can then share real-life experience to students and perhaps do it with them.

We do not like entrepreneurship taught as if it is an exam-oriented subject, a theoretical mystery or a word game. Entrepreneurship should be real, practical and exciting. And the best way to achieve this in our younger generation is by training the teachers first. Because only Teachers who know the stuff can teach the stuff.

In today’s trade show environment, you can now amplify your real-time trade show display experience once the trade show ends. How? Have you ever thought to have your trade show booth available online? By using video on demand on your company website you can entice visitors to come to your trade show display at their convenience.

The recent 2007 giant Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January had over 140,000 trade show visitors with approximately 2,700 trade show exhibitors who showcased the year’s new technology and set the stage for hi-tech trends. It was the technology industry’s largest trade show, yet it was not open to the public.

There is good news, however, for trade show “wannabes” who no longer have to feel left out in the cold. Millions of virtual trade show visitors are now able to view trade show highlights and new launches via the Internet. Virtual trade show visitors can witness the breaking news of the technology trade show exhibitors online by playing video on demand found on trade show exhibitor’s websites. The CES show’s message was the news of the “digital living room” and “convergence” touting products that allow us to take our favorite media on the road and transfer it around the house. Now we can sit in our digital living rooms and watch trade show exhibitors via the Internet.

Take it from Bill Gates, tycoon of Microsoft, and legendary Steve Jobs, guru of Apple–they want to extend their audiences well beyond the trade show floor. These industry titans have created video on demand on their company websites as a way to share their trade show experience with the entire universe– not just those physically attending the trade show.

Gates gave a rousing, informative keynote speech at the CES Show, and Jobs gave a magical keynote speech at his MacWorld. Both got loud cheers from those in attendance, but they also got a lot of praise from the millions of virtual trade show visitors who viewed their speeches online.

Want to hear them now? Click on their websites and you’ll get to hear the magic they spun at their recent trade shows.

Join Bill Gates as he keynotes 2007 CES demonstrating how Microsoft is delivering a new generation of connected experiences. Gates announced several new offerings from Windows Vista, Xbox 360, Microsoft TV and more.

Here is a list of what you can see and hear about CES in Las Vegas on Microsoft’s website:

o What’s New from Partners?

o Zune After Hours It’s midnight at Tao, the perfect time to talk about Zune.

o Meet the Regans, a Windows Vista Family

Remember, if you want to expand on your trade show exhibit experience and make it last after the physical trade show ends, you can add video on your company website that will highlight your trade show display and the news of your new product launches. By having video on demand, you can recapture the highlights of your trade show experience — wherever you had your trade show exhibit–whether it be at the McCormick Convention Center in Chicago, the Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, the Moscone Center in San Francisco, the Santa Clara Convention Center or the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.

Your trade show costs can dramatically escalate if you just happen to hire an inexperienced shipping company to transport your trade show booth to the conference site. You may suddenly be faced with broken or missing parts, late delivery and a budget that could put your company’s trade show display in total disarray and your job in jeopardy.

Although unforeseen events such as a major winter blizzard can cause havoc with your trade show delivery schedule and budgeting, it is always best to minimize your chances for error by picking the right professional transportation company. If you want your trade show booth to arrive in good condition, on time and within your budgeted allowance, you need to be informed on how to pick the right freight handler and transportation company.

You can take control of your trade show booth’s destiny by becoming fully informed.
Bad weather, causing flight delays at certain times of the year, is a concern beyond your control. But just like you can reclaim lost luggage from an airliner if you have your name tag on it, you have a better chance of finding a lost or misplaced trade show booth element if, for example, you labeled every part of your trade show display in advance.

Although GPS technology has been a boon to tracking trade show booths, it can’t find what is not labeled. And, since there are so many different people handing the shipment of a trade show booth, there is no guarantee that your trade show exhibit will arrive safely on the other end. You can, however, improve your odds of success by taking steps to insure your trade show display’s safe journey. Thus, the first step is to find an experienced trade show specific carrier.

George Poppe of National Transportation in El Segundo, California, offers the following tips on what to look for in a trade show freight carrier. They are:

1. Make sure your transportation company records all of your trade show exhibit information, such as destination, schedule, weight, number of pieces, and exact dimensions of your pieces. This detailed information not only determines the cost of transporting your trade show booth to the exhibit site but also drayage costs (what the unions charge to deliver your booth from the loading dock onto and off the trade show floor)

2. Look for a freight carrier that has a good rapport with the unions so
your trade show exhibit will be in reliable hands. You are better able to avoid unnecessary charges if your transportation carrier deals regularly with the trade show conference hall unions. Your carrier benefits from knowing the industry venues well–whether they be the McCormick Convention Center in Chicago, the Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, the Moscone Center in San Francisco, the Santa Clara Convention Center or the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.

3. Look for a transportation company that handles a large volume of trade show business. You can get price breaks if your cargo company has multiple or less than truck load shipments to a convention site. An example of what can happen is the recent Semicon West 2006 Convention at Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco July 11 -13th.

Poppe reported that, due to the popularity of this show, his National Transportation Company had to wait in the marshalling yard for 11 hours before delivery at the unloading dock. Because he had 3 trucks and multiple shipments, he was able to waive the waiting charge fees which would normally be charged. A less experienced trucker most likely would pass along these charges to the trade show exhibitor. Marshal yard fees range anywhere from $45 – $85 hour.

4. Select a trade show freight company that has first class communication capability. Check to see if they offer 24/7 contact with a live person, since trade shows are not a 9 to 5 business. Also make sure you give them contact names and cell phone numbers of your exhibitor reps on the trade show floor. Check to see if the freight company has the capability of sending Internet air bills and bill of ladings in case an air bill is lost and you need a duplicate copy immediately.

Poppe suggests that once you select your freight company, you should ship 7 – 10 days ahead of your targeted move in date in order to avoid late penalties. And be sure to also communicate your trade show exhibit details with the company you select to do your trade show installation and dismantling. It’s really all about communicating.

Remember, do your homework in advance and know what you can do to avoid major mishaps of shipping your trade show booth. By picking an experienced freight company, you can minimize your exposure to mislaid or damaged trade show booth components and budget cost overruns.

Youth Entrepreneurship is becoming popular nowadays with the advent of such websites as Ashoka’s Changemakers. It is interesting to see young people engage in activities that seek to make the world a better place. Instead of just spending their time in front of the TV or the computer, a number of young people are choosing to devote their time in sharing amazing ideas on how to protect the environment, empower the poor and start movements that would help other people.

Perhaps, these young ones suited to youth social entrepreneurship. Why is that?

The youth have a lot of passion. Social entrepreneurship is not motivated by money or profit. It is actually driven by a desire to make the world a better place. Too often though, charitable institutions are not creative or ambitious enough to make big changes in the world. With the passion of youth social entrepreneurship, perhaps the world can be a better place.

Almost boundless energy. With youth come strength and energy. Although a lot of youth and young adults are devoting their energies to destructive causes such as gangs and self-destructive habits, some youth can be asked to make a difference in their world. With their almost boundless energy, the youth can certainly make an impact in any of their chosen advocacies or causes.

Technologically savvy. The youth are also savvy in using the internet, the Web and the latest technologies that come out in the market. While older people tend to use such gadgets extensively, youth tend to be more creative in using these tools and integrate them in their lives. The use of technology can enhance whatever cause that youths choose to support.

No big deal responsibilities. Most youth are carefree. This just means that they still do not have big deal responsibilities. Because of that, they have more free time to travel, to devote some part of their money to some cause and advocacy. They can also serve as volunteers in a non-profit organization. Or, given their youth, they can even start their own movements in changing the world.

Risks. Youth are generally risk-takers. They want to always push the limits and boundaries-whether in the home, in the school or in society. Imagine if the youth expended their energy on a world-changing activity and opportunity! The world will become an amazing place in no time.

Youth social entrepreneurship is nothing new. It is just gaining new attention because a lot of youth have engaged in destructive behavior that it is surprising and refreshing to see youth and young adults engage in social entrepreneurship that could help change the world for the better.

Internet entrepreneurship is a generic term used to describe an entrepreneur who carries out his business activities online. Often at the first mention of internet entrepreneurship, the first image that conjures up in many minds is online stores like eBay.com or Amazon. As such, this article will discuss the aspects of being an internet entrepreneur with illustrations from a brief case study of Eric Smith, CEO of UnWired Buyer Services.

There has been tremendous proliferation of ‘get-rich quick’ internet schemes, and more often than not, these packages are designed to lure opportunists with the ‘get-rich’ mentality into forking out their pockets in hope of becoming the next ‘big thing’ on the Net. Contrary to this, being a successful internet entrepreneur doesn’t just happen overnight. Yaro Starak, a successful Australian entrepreneur, has this to say about ‘get- rich’ schemes:

“Here’s what you need to do. Stop buying products, look at what you have already, what you have learnt and where you think you could best leverage your skills.”

As is the same with brick-and –mortar entrepreneurship, internet entrepreneurship requires one to transform an idea into action. More often than not, it is a long process of perseverance and preparation, and the common reason for failed entrepreneurship ventures is more often due to laziness. Also, the lessons learnt in brick-and-mortar entrepreneurship must be applied to internet entrepreneurship, as elements like a strong idea for a product or service, solid understanding of the product or service, the customer, marketing principles and elements of financing ( CELCEE, 2003) must be factored in carefully. Furthermore, net-prenuers have to understand the dynamics of web technology in bringing their stores to the homes of their customers. These are considerations that a net-prenuer has to account for.

Above all factors, the defining characteristic of a true net-prenuer is one who has faced rejection, and has managed to overcome its hurdle. This was the case with Eric Smith, creator of eBay’s UnWired Buyer service, which alerts eBay buyers when their auction is ending and allows them to make last-minute bids by phone, using a phone firewall technology. The rationale behind UnWired is this: Buyers bid more often and bid higher when they use UnWired Buyer’s services, and the higher an auction goes, the bigger the payoff for eBay. eBay then pays UnWired an undisclosed percentage of revenue it gets when an Unwired Buyer user wins their auction. What most don’t know is that before the success of UnWired, Eric suffered a failed business opportunity in an earlier net venture utilizing phone firewall technology for online daters and users of social networking sites, who wanted to connect with potential matches without revealing their real numbers. Within a month of introduction, users found the service too expensive, as Eric had no way to lower the cost of that technology.

However, against all odds, Eric saw another opportunity, when his wife was telling him how she had been outbid again on eBay one day, as eBay did not have such a free phone bidding service back then. As the story goes, Eric proceeded to sell eBay his technological idea, and the rest of UnWired is history.

In summary, the story goes to show that internet entrepreneurship transcends more than a great idea, but solid character and action also plays a pivotal role in success. The ability to overcome a setback and not to be overcomed, is a net-prenuer’s greatest asset. To borrow a quote from Janelle Elms, “ make sure you’re using the “triangle of success””. That triangle comprises of 3 factors: “Character, Conscientiousness, and Consistency”. This is the heart of a successful net-preneur.

Entrepreneurship is a great art of organizing the minimal possible resources to achieve great goals in business. Various people explain entrepreneurship in different ways. Entrepreneurship is a very difficult and tricky concept to understand. It is a new way of getting into new ventures and founding or pioneering certain new projects. It applies to the concept of creation. Entrepreneurship is all about creation. It is a great way to curb your own path. It is like investing on something which may or may not be successful. Entrepreneurship is like exploring the new realms of business. Entrepreneurs are the future of any nation’s economy.

There are certain qualities attributed to the entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs have to be the perfect embodiments of several qualities like – organization, integrity, patience, honesty and of course they need a big heart. If you are someone who has a great idea but are scared about implementing them just for the sake of failing, then you are not the perfect entrepreneur and it is not your cup of tea. Entrepreneurs have this strange ability of assessing the risks and then invest their money. There are many who are really not able to take that risk.

Entrepreneurship is a great way to accomplish the dreams. Entrepreneurship is also about risk taking; one has to have a lion’s heart. The instincts and the integrity to succeed can help you in this cause. There are many ways in which one can achieve big roles- trusting your instincts are just one of them. Though business is all about being calculative and assessing the permutations and combinations, still the entrepreneurship is all about risk and instincts. There are times when logically an idea may seem to be stupid and boring without much of an importance in that point of time, but as the years roll on that idea may yield millions. Take for example the internet marketing. Everyone in this world liked this concept but was very apprehensive about disclosing their assets on website. Now, it is the trend which everyione follows, everyone want to do an internet shopping. E-bay is the biggest example of spell bounding success. There are many instances where people have climbed from rags to riches just by believing their Instincts. If you want to make your own way up in the hierarchy working in an office that time will never come soon. Every new idea in this world is a creation of one’s instincts. Instinctive people are not vague thinkers they are very organized people who believe in their work and evolve every day.

Entrepreneurs are bound to trust their instincts. One must understand that instincts can curb a pavement through the most difficult times. These are times when should realize that one thing can help you out of this mess that is your instinct and your senses. Entrepreneurs have to be stubborn and hard headed at times because they are the pioneers. They must believe in whatever they are doing. The Harder a person Works on their ideas and dreams the more fruitful their instinct will turn out to be.
